7月23日，光帆2号成功展开光帆，仅仅依靠阳光提供推力，在4天时间里，其轨道高度提升约2公里。　　驭光而行的想法由来已久　　事实上，光帆的概念早在上个世纪20年代就已经出现了，最初的设想是单纯利用太空中取之不尽的免费能源太阳能，为宇宙飞船提供动力。但在随后的很多年，光帆的概念只出现在科幻小说中，直到1959年才出现了第一篇关于光帆的学术论文。上个世纪50年代，美国国家航空航天局（NASA）开始着手研究光帆，但由于美苏航天竞争和载人登月计划，光帆技术的研究在60年代几乎停滞。直到70年代NASA喷气推进实验室（JPL）的研究人员计划发射一枚以光帆为推进器的航天器去实现与哈雷彗星的会合，在当时其他技术几乎是不可能实现的，所以该项目很快获得了NASA的立项。虽然最终由于技术限制和电推进方案的竞争该项目被放弃了，但这是人类第一次尝试利用光帆来进行空间探测。此次光帆2号既是第一个在地球轨道上使用光帆推进的航天器，也是继日本IKAROS任务之后，第二艘成功使用光帆的航天器。　　那么，太阳光怎样为航天器提供推力呢？　　光帆表面覆盖着能够反射太阳光的金属薄膜。清华大学航天航空学院副教授龚胜平谈到，光子既有能量，又有动量，从动量的角度解释太阳光压力更好理解，光子撞击光帆表面的金属镀层时被反射，与光帆产生动量交换，从而给了航天器飞行的动力。　　不同形态的光帆各有优点　　龚胜平描绘了光帆2号的出航过程：最开始它以一个被打包的收缩状态放在卫星中，进入太空后展开，利用光压进行轨道攀升。　　光帆的形态分为两种，一种是自旋型，姿态自旋稳定；另一种是支撑型，姿态三轴稳定。龚胜平表示，它们各有优劣，自旋展开方式不需要支撑结构，结构简单，且没有支撑结构可以获得更大面质比，但航天器自旋需要消耗一定能量，同时，改变光帆的姿态（帆面的空间指向）比较困难，而三轴稳定型则相反。光帆2号就属于支撑型，此前日本的IKAROS属于自旋型。　　由于光帆的动力来源于太阳光，且光压强度与太阳距离平方成反比，当它在远离太阳时，其加速性能将减弱。因此，光帆在离太阳更近的空间探测任务中具有更大的优势。但也可以利用光帆的持续加速特性探测距离太阳较远的空间，这就要求在光压力变得很小之前利用光压力将光帆加速到很大的速度。　　面积为1平方公里的光帆受到的作用力大概只有9牛顿。龚胜平表示。
