单家集曾三次与红军结缘。如今，兴隆镇单南村党支部书记单云当起了义务讲解员，向来往的人们讲述这里的故事——1935年8月15日，红二十五军在军长程子华、政委吴焕先、副军长徐海东率领下，进入今西吉县境内。之前，红军队伍从未经过此地。因此，红二十五军对全军指战员进行了党的民族宗教政策教育，制定并宣布了“三大禁条、四项注意”，如禁止驻扎清真寺、禁止在回族群众家中吃大荤、注意尊重回族人民生活习惯等。当部队到达时，发现街道上冷冷清清。“那时候老百姓受国民党军队和土匪征粮逼款，一听说军队来就跑的跑、藏的藏。”单云说。红二十五军用言行，让老百姓打开了自家大门。吴焕先、徐海东亲自访问了宗教人士，并召集当地有声望的老人和阿訇座谈，宣传中国共产党抗日救国的主张和红军的政策纪律，并讲明红军到此地只是稍作休息，不征粮要款，不拉夫抓丁，以解除回族群众的疑虑，稳定人心。8月16日中午，吴焕先、程子华、徐海东等带领着军乐队，抬着“回汉兄弟亲如一家”的锦匾，牵着肥羊，拜访了清真寺的阿訇。随即阿訇也领着回族群众带上礼品，前往红二十五军军部作了隆重回拜。在单家集休整期间，红军指战员不仅把驻地院子和街头巷尾打扫得干干净净，东西收拾得整整齐齐，还帮助回族群众挑水、扫院。军医院的医生在院长钱信忠的带领下，也热情地为回族群众送药治病。当地老百姓赞叹：“红军就是咱老百姓自己的部队！”红二十五军三天的驻扎，赢得了当地回族群众的拥护和爱戴。当他们离开时，老百姓在街旁设置了香案茶桌，摆上点心，为红军送行、带路。有了之前的铺垫，一个多月后的10月5日，当毛泽东率领中央红军经过单家集时，受到了当地群众热烈欢迎。据老人们回忆，毛泽东一进村就去清真寺拜访了阿訇，与阿訇促膝共叙军民情谊，并详细了解当地的风土人情。毛泽东给阿訇和在场的回族群众讲解中国共产党和中国工农红军尊重回族群众风俗习惯、保护清真寺、主张民族平等的民族政策。阿訇们听完毛泽东的讲解后非常高兴，马上招呼大家给红军腾房子，粮食也按市价卖给红军。当晚，毛泽东住在了清真寺北侧一位回族农民的家里。第二天一早，红军离开单家集继续向东进发。1936年9月14日，以彭德怀为司令员兼政委的西方野战军下辖一军团在代军团长左权、政委聂荣臻的率领下第三次来到单家集，驻扎了40多天。红军第三次到单家集，在当地开展革命活动，成立了单家集苏维埃自治政府，选举回族农民马云清为政府主席。“这是西吉县境内的第一个红色政权。”西吉县文化馆馆长刘成才介绍。“长征途中，在一次次与少数民族接触、交流、沟通和互动后，中国共产党积累了丰富的民族工作经验，并在此基础上制定、检验和逐步完善了民族政策。”刘成才说。
